Total Soccer Fitness and Training is dedicated to teaching 'The Beautiful Game' to players, coaches, parents, leagues, clubs, and teams.

Tactical Drills

The Tactical Phase in any practice session plan should include more than just a 2-team scrimmage. Here you will find games -- from small-sided (3v3, 5v5, etc.) to large group (6v3+3, etc.) -- and match-specific exercises to fit any tactical theme.

Technical Drills

As the saying goes, there are no tactics without techniques. Included here are drills that hone all the technical fundamentals -- juggling, dribbling, striking the ball/finishing, defending and goalkeeping. Also included are warmup drills to use at the beginning of each session.

Session Plans

Every training session should have a plan with a specific theme, be it technical, tactical or fitness. Here you will find session plans that emphasize such concepts as "Possession", "Striking the Ball", and "Speed of Play".

Speed, Agility, Quickness Drills

Speed, Agility and Quickness is a major part of all our sessions. In this section you will find drills that work all three concepts both with and without the soccer ball. Also included are warmup routines and a dynamic stretching routine.

“READY. SET. GO!”
One of the most important concepts taught at Total Soccer Fitness & Training is Proper Running Mechanics. In our individual and small group training sessions we time our players in various sprints, such as a 10-Yard Sprint and a 10x4 Shuttle. Our young soccer player is about to run a 10-yard sprint. Notice the following Proper Running Mechanics:

  • Heels are off the ground
  • A slight lean to the body
  • Right arm and left leg are back and ready to explode off the start
  • Left arm is in a good position – a 90-degree angle
  • Both hands are open and loose, not clenched in a fist

"QUICK FEET" -- one of the many drills we use to teach quick feet is demonstrated here by one of our high school players. Watch how she high-steps quickly through the 14 hurdles.

A Man's Man

by Tom DeNigris 22. May 2008 05:54

A few weeks ago I wrote that Rio Ferdinand was better than John Terry but not by much.

I was wrong.

Terry is better.

Terry, as his mate Frank Lampard so elegantly stated, "is a man’s man." Terry, El Capataino of the English National Team, stepped up big time in the Champions League final against Manchester United in Moscow. His performance in the match, in those 120 grueling minutes of soccer, was simply outstanding.

That he missed his crucial kick in the penalty kick shootout could not take away from what he did on the pitch during the match.

I have said for years that penalty kick shootouts are not a good way to decide games, especially championship finals. Regular season matches, fine. Champion League Finals, World Cup Finals, no.

The Champions League PK shootout was exciting, for sure. And for an Arsenal fan like me I was rooting for both teams to keep missing. Seeing Cristiano Ronaldo miss his attempt was a thing of beauty. His stutter-stop and kick method is ridiculous so his miss was justified.

But I have to admit, that when John Terry stepped up to take that fifth and what would have been winning kick, I was rooting for him (I may have been rooting against Manchester United just as hard as I was rooting for Terry, in truth, because you know that old joke is true for me — "Who’s your favorite team? Arsenal. Who’s your second favorite team? Whoever is playing Man U!)

Nonetheless, I wanted Terry to make it.

Give Terry props. Chances are that fifth kick or any one of the previous four would have been taken by Didier Drogba. Except Drogba, who may have just played his final match for Chelsea (good riddance), decided that his manhood was more important than winning when he was red-carded. What an idiotic move by such a fine player.

So up stepped Terry. Alas, he slipped on his attempt and the ball sailed right.

After Man U clinched the win, Terry could be seen crying. The loss was on his shoulders but his mates came to his defense.

They did not come to Drogba’s defense. Nor should they.

I do not like Chelsea. I never will unless they sign Mia Hamm-Garciaparra or Thierry Henry (he wouldn’t dare sign with them...would he?). But I have to like John Terry.

He’s a pro. Indeed, a man’s man.

I like him. A lot.

You think the Red Bulls could sign him? They need a central defender (among about a few thousand other things).

ALSO IN MY HONEST OPINION...

...you realize that match ended way past 1 am — no, not here in the states, but in Moscow

...of course, it didn’t kick off until quarter to 11 so that it could be seen live in western Europe at 9 pm

...Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney do make for quite a formiable front line for Man U

...My beloved Inter Milan staggered its way to the Serie A title but need to make some changes

...Josh Wolff is in nowhere’s-ville, no team, no contract — but he’s on the USA roster for its friendly vs. Terry and his English mates

...I’m guessing Eric Wynalda wasn’t available for Bob Bradley

...Josh Wolff instead of Kenny Cooper! Just don’t understand it

...Landon Donovan is about to become the fourth youngest player to earn 100 caps! That’s an outstanding feat

...Luis Figo to the Red Bulls! I’m gonna keep saying it ’til it happens<br />...Clint Mathis is the John Daly of soccer — so much talent wasted

...still got my Mathis Metro Stars t-shirt — I’ll keep it hanging for him, just in case he returns. Again.
